Oscar-winning ‘Fantastic Woman’ opens Friday

Dan Webster

And, of course, another — we hope final — adjustment has been made to Friday's movie-release schedule. It involves the late announcement of another Oscar-winning film:

"A Fantastic Woman": Chilean actress Daniela Vega plays the title character, a transgender woman who has to face life on her own following the death of her older lover. Oscar-winner for Best Foreign Language Film (in Spanish with English subtitles).

Here are some critical comments:

Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune: "Although the 21st-century issue of transphobia is the context of the story, it's one that anyone who has felt unwelcomed for any reason can watch with understanding and sympathy."

Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times: "A Fantastic Woman" becomes a delicate, moving study of grief, of quiet triumph over adversity, of adjusting to life's empty spaces - and learning to fill them with love."

Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times: "The most plausible element, the foundation on which the movie rests and finally soars, is Vega's magnetic and meticulously controlled performance."

That's the lot. Still a few Oscar-nominated and -winning films playing locally. See them while you can.
