Roll out the Demons

Pints Alehouse is putting on one of its biggest big-beer events ever this weekend.

An Avery barrel-aged bash Friday and Saturday starting at 3 p.m. will feature at least 14 of the Colorado brewery’s woody offerings both on draft and in bottles.

“Avery and barrel-aged is almost a no-fail combination,” says Pints owner Derek Quist.

Two years ago, Quist did a Halloween weekend tasting centering around Avery’s Demons of Ale series. Now he’s decided to bring it back, expand it and make it an annual happening.

“I just thought the whole Halloween theme with the Demons was a good pairing,” he says.

At least two of the Demons will be on tap this weekend: The Beast grand cru (16.8 percent alcohol by volume) and Samael’s oak-aged strong ale (16.3).

They’ll be joined by Rumpkin pumpkin ale aged in rum barrels (18), PumpKYn bourbon barrel-aged pumpkin porter with spices (15), Tweak bourbon barrel-aged coffee imperial stout (17.5), bourbon barrel-aged Uncle Jacob’s imperial stout (17.1) and bourbon barrel-aged Vanilla Bean Stout (10.8).

Bottled selections will include Expletus tequila barrel-aged sour with cherries (5.9), Fortuna tequila barrel-aged sour with lime zest and sea salt (8.1), Tectum et Elix cabernet sauvignon barrel-aged sour with Brett (5.5), Lunctis Viribus wine and tequila barrel-aged sour (5.4), Insula Multos Collibus bourbon barrel-aged sour with cherries (9.7), Certatio Equestris oak aged sour with spearmint (8.9) and Callipygian bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout with cocoa, coffee, and vanilla beans (17.4).

While those already are part of Pints’ regular bottle menu, this weekend they’ll be poured in 5.5-ounce snifters, like the draft offerings.

“It’s kind of a painful thing to purchase some of these beers,” Quist says of the full-bottle prices. “This is a chance to get a snifter pour without having to commit to a full bottle.”

The event will run for two days to help customers sample more of the beers, he adds: “Quite a few of these beers are pretty high-octane. If you want to try all of them, you can’t do it in one sitting.”

And to help you squeeze them all in, Pints is staying open later now on Fridays and Saturdays, until 11 p.m.
