Deschutes-ing the barrels

Rick Bonino

Fans of barrel-aged beers in general, and Deschutes in particular, are in for a real treat today at Pints Alehouse.

Starting at 3 p.m., the North Spokane pub will pour a stellar lineup of the Oregon brewery’s specialty beers that includes:

– A vertical tasting of the 2013, 2014 and 2015 The Abyss imperial stout (12 percent alcohol by volume), aged in bourbon, Pinot Noir and oak barrels.

– The just-released Abyss variations aged in rye whiskey and cognac barrels (poured from bottles, not available in draft.)

– 2014 Mirror Mirror barleywine (11.2 percent ABV) aged in Tempranillo, Pinot Noir and Malbec wine barrels.

– 2015 Black Butte XVII imperial porter (11.6) aged in bourbon barrels with cocoa nibs, apricots and pomegranate molasses.

– 2015 Super Jubel strong ale (Jubelale’s big brother, 10.4) aged in Pinot Noir and oak barrels.

– 2015 The Stoic Belgian-style quad (10.9) aged in rye whiskey and Pinot barrels.

Along with those big barrel boys, there also will be Hop Henge experimental IPA (8.9, 90 International Bitterness Units) and the EHOP amber ale collaboration with Boston’s Harpoon Brewery (7.4, 35) brewed with sage and thyme.

Sample-size pours will be available for responsible tasting, and a brewery representative will be on hand.
