One shining April

Rick Bonino

Some people proclaim a birthday week, but The Lantern Tap House is going one better with a whole birthday month.

The South Perry pub is celebrating its sixth anniversary all April, bookended by a pair of events starring Iron Goat.

Festivities start Wednesday with a tasting of two vintages of Goatnik imperial stout: a rare keg of the original 2012 release along with the recent 2014. For $15 you get a 10-ounce pour of both; reservations are required and spots are filling fast, so sign up at the Lantern right away if you’re interested.

And April 24 will see the tapping of the Goat’s Grapefruit IPA, brewed specially for the occasion with actual grapefruit peel and juice. That was originally made in February as part of the weekly Year of the Goat small-batch series at Iron Goat, and Lantern patrons voted for it as the anniversary beer.

In addition, all Iron Goat pints will be $4 throughout the month.

Other events include a Dogfish Head tap takeover on April 9, featuring the 60, 90, and 120 Minute IPAs (10-ounce pours for $5); a tasting of Deschutes’ Black Butte XXV imperial porter from 2013 on April 15 ($8 for a 10-ounce pour and commemorative glass); and a tap takeover April 23 with specialty selections from the Oregon Coast’s Pelican Brewing.

What was originally the Lantern Tavern opened in 2009 as a tiny 12-seat bar with four taps. It has since grown to 10 taps and expanded as a restaurant into the adjoining space formerly occupied by the Perry Street Café, and hosts a series of events each year including sour, fresh hop and winter beer festivals.

“It’s been exciting times,” says co-owner Mike Dolmage, who came on board in 2012. “We’re looking forward to more anniversaries. There’s a lot left to do.”
