Here comes the brewed

Rick Bonino

Orlison’s new seasonal release is a match made in Airway Heights, by way of Sumatra.

Roast House Coffee Stout (5.5 percent alcohol by volume, 62 International Bitterness Units) is a variation on Orlison’s Underground stout lager, brewed with ground Noir beans from the Spokane-based coffee company.

It will be unveiled at a release party Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Yards Bruncheon in Kendall Yards. Cover charge is $15 (21 and older only), which gets you beer plus food from sister restaurant Wandering Table. (Discount tickets are $10 with a 1-pound purchase at the Roast House warehouse.)

After that, the beer should start showing up at accounts around town next week.

The Roast House website describes Noir, made with rare organic Sumatran beans, as “dark roasted with charred oak aroma, walnut acidity, buttery body with notes of English tobacco and German chocolate.”

Orlison brewmaster Bernie Duenwald says he used 53 pounds of the coffee and a gallon of vanilla for the single, 30-barrel batch, meaning that each pint of the beer contains as much caffeine as an 8-ounce cup of coffee.

A test version I recently tasted was rich, roasty and balanced, the coffee flavor prominent but not overpowering to my somewhat java-averse palate.

Walker in the house: Also Thursday evening, Manito Tap House welcomes Firestone-Walker Brewing co-founder David Walker starting at 6 p.m.

Along with some of the usual Firestone-Walker suspects, look for last year’s Winter Wookey, a blend of the Wookey Jack rye Cascadian dark ale and un-oaked Double DBA; Bretta Weisse, a tart, barrel-aged wheat beer; and Sucuba ’13, a barrel-aged barleywine.

Barleywine bash: Enoteca in Post Falls launches its second annual Strong Liver Barleywine Tour on Thursday. At least two cellared kegs of barleywines and old ales will be on tap at all times through February, with prizes for the heartiest drinkers ranging from T-shirts to growler fills to an instant cellar.
