This Bud’s for who?

Rick Bonino

Word is spreading throughout the land: The King has been dethroned.

The beer Web is all abuzz over a report in Sunday’s Wall Street Journal showing that craft beer outsold Budweiser last year for the first time.

Shipments of all craft beers combined totaled 16.1 million barrels in 2013, compared to 16 million for regular Budweiser – which already had been passed in the individual brand sales rankings by Bud Light and Coors Light.

In response, the WSJ reports, Anheuser-Busch InBev is refocusing its marketing efforts to appeal to 21- to 27-year-olds – almost half of whom have never had a Bud – in an attempt to reverse steadily declining sales. (The brand’s strength is in the 28-to-34 category.)

That means the iconic Clydesdales will be replaced in this holiday season’s TV ads by images of twentysomethings naming the friends they’d most like to grab a Budweiser with. Next year, A-B plans to sponsor food festivals aimed at a younger crowd, along with music-themed parties in college towns.

So to all you twentysomethings out there: Have you ever tried a Budweiser? If so, did you keep drinking it? And if not, what would it take for you to pick one up again? Click on the headline above and leave us a comment.

UPDATE: An A-B spokesman said later Monday that the Clydesdales are't being completely put out to pasture: "The story this morning may have left a wrong impression – the Budweiser Clydesdales will, in fact, be featured in next year's Super Bowl advertising and are also a part of upcoming holiday responsible drinking advertising."
