Update: Apparently "Nightmare Alley" will not play at the Magic Lantern.

In keeping with its mission of featuring the best that the world of cinema has to offer, the Magic Lantern on Friday will begin screening seven movies that between them earned a total of 34 Oscar nominations.

The Motion Picture Academy announced the potential Oscar winners on Tuesday (the ceremony will be broadcast March 27). New additions to the Lantern’s schedule are:

“The Power of the Dog,” Jane Campion’s film, earned an industry-leading 12 nominations: Best Picture, Director (Campion), Actor Benedict Cumberbatch), Actress (Kirsten Dunst), Supporting Actor  Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee), Adapted Screenplay (Campion again), Production Design, Sound, Cinematography, Film Editing and Original Score (Radiohead’s Johnny Greenwood).

“Nightmare Alley,” Guillermo del Toro’s adaption of a 1946 noir novel of the same name, earned four nominations: Best Picture, Production Design, Costume Design and Cinematography.

“Parallel Mothers,” Pedro Almodóvar’s original film earned two nominations: Best Actress (Penelope Cruz) and Original Score.

“Being the Ricardos,” written and directed bh Aaron Sorkin, earned three nominations: Best Actress (Nicole Kidman), Actor (Javier Bardem) and Supporting Actor (J.K. Simmons)

The Lantern’s holdovers are:

“Belfast,” written and directed by Kenneth Branagh, earned seven nominations: Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay (Branagh), Supporting Actor (Ciarán Hinds), Supporting Actress (Judi Dench), Original Song (“Down to Joy” by Van Morrison) and Best Sound

“The Tragedy of Macbeth,” written and directed by Joel Coen, earned three nominations: Best Actor (Denzel Washington), Production Design and Cinematography

“Licorice Pizza,” written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, earned three nominations: Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay.

The only other movie on the Lantern’s schedule is the documentary “The Velvet Queen.” But it is a winner, too, having taken the Audience Award at the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival.

As I said, only the best films screen at the Magic Lantern.
