Friday’ openings: Grimm stories, past and present

Dan Webster

Violence and horror will be on the movie menu this coming Friday, or so says the national release schedule. The two wide releases are:

"The Rhythm Section": Blake Lively stars as a woman bent on avenging the deaths of family members, and that means several people gonna have to die. None of them run movie studios, though.

"Gretel and Hansel": The old Grimm Brothers folk tale, which hails from Germany, is retold with Gretel taking the lead. But there's still a witch, the kids are still hungry and dangers still lurks that these deep, dark woods.

And at the Magic Lantern? Spokane's arthouse movie theater will screen the Oscar-nominated Live Action and Animated shorts programs.

But as usual, there's likely to be more. I'll update as the area theaters finalize their bookings.
