Monday Movies series features ‘Always in Season’

Dan Webster

Black History Month comes to the Magic Lantern Theater at 7 p.m. on Monday with a special Monday Movies screening of the documentary film "Always in Season."

According to the Public Broadcasting System's Independent Lens website, " 'Always in Season' follows the tragedy of African American teenager Lennon Lacy, who in August 2014, was found hanging from a swing set in Bladenboro, N. C. His suspicious death was ruled a suicide by law enforcement, but Lennon’s mother, Claudia, her family, and many others believe Lennon was lynched."

Some critical comments include:

Michael Rechtshaffen, Los Angeles Times: "The impact of hearing Danny Glover’s calm voice reading published invitations to lynching parties remains chillingly undiminished."

Odie Henderson, RogerEbert.com: "By virtue of its subject, Always in Season is going to be a very hard sit for many, but this film should be seen. It is an unflinching look at how the racial sins of the past remain flowing through the arteries of the present day."

Keith Uhligh, The Hollywood Reporter: "Olive paints a portrait of righteous rage and determination."

The screening is free.
