Badass Backyard Brewing
1415 N. Argonne Rd., Spokane Valley, WA
The snowboarding-inspired beers (from Daring Diva raspberry wheat to Big Air stout) are brewed at the owners’ Millwood home and served up the street in a homey space in the shopping center at Argonne and Mission. A satellite North Idaho taproom opened in February 2018 in the back of the Coeur d’Alene Fresh retail complex.
Opened: August 2015
The story: True to the name, Charlene Honcik and Kendra Wiiest operate this small-scale brewery out of a detached shop at their Spokane Valley home.
The scene: While the brewing still takes place in the backyard, the taproom has moved to the Argonne Mission Center next to Chan's Bistro. The new space, a former Good Feet store, is styled after the former home taproom. Corrugated metal fronts the long, winding bar, the wall behind is done up in brick and an opposite wall is covered with wood from pallets at the old place.
Food: Outside food allowed.
Live music: None
Specials: 10 percent discount for military, police and fire personnel as well as 911 emergency operators.
Brewhouse size: One barrel
Beers: Regular offerings include Not Your Average Blonde (6 percent alcohol by volume, 21 International Bitterness Units), Daring Diva Razz Wheat (6.5, 21), 50/50 Amber (7, 38), Board Breaker Brown (6, 42), Big Air Black Stout (7.9, 53) and Adrenaline Seeker IPA (7.2, 70). Rotating smaller-batch selections include the likes of a huckleberry session stout, Berliner weisse and gose sours, and bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout and strong Scotch ale.
Other options: Hard cider and wine.
Don’t miss: While the tart-leaning raspberry is a big draw, it’s worth checking out the brown – a lesser-seen style around town – which starts out lightly sweet, then turns roasty with a dry finish.
