- Director Michael Apted is best known in this ocuntry for mainstream films such as ""Coalminer's Daughter'' and ""Gorillas in the Mist.'' But more than two decades ago, he began an intriguing sociological experiment by filjing a grouof British children from various social and economic backgrounds. Apted's intent was to study the kids at seven-year cycles. This 1985 documentary updats the children to age 28, and contrasts that with scenes of them from ages 7, 14 and 21. The effect is a fascinating look at how people change, at how childhood can either provide us the nourishment we need to tackle life on ouyr own or how it can beat us down until we either compalcently conform or, as one unfortunate fellow does, end up drifting from one lonely town to the nest.
