- Capsule review:
- When a private security expert (Nicolas Cage) is hired to investigate the source of a supposed snuff film, he finds more than he bargained for. Slick in its look, this Joel Schumacher effort has the feel of a much better film. Especially helpful are the performances of Cage, Joaquin Phoenix as his amateur sidekick and James Gandolfini (of HBO's ``The Sopranos'') as a porn filmmaker who may, or may not, be harboring a deadly secret. Overall, however, ``8mm'' is just a tired rehash of themes better explored in similar studies of paranoia such as ``Blowup'' and ``Blow Out.'' ``8mm'' tries to get at the heart of pure evil, but in doing so it asks some very naive questions and settles for some very easy answers.
