- Capsule review:
- An ensemble cast that includes (in alphabetical order) Ben Affleck, David Chappelle, Janeane Garofalo, Courtney Love, Jay Mohr, Martha Plimpton, Paul Rudd and Christina Ricci are featured in this film about the lives and loves of a loosely connected group of 20-somethings on New Year's Eve 1981. Following a plot that tends to ramble, and that doesn't seem to have much of an overall point, the film is mostly a chance for the actors to show their stuff. And enough of them connect. Movie-star-of-the-moment Ben Affleck shows he isn't afraid to play something of a loser. Courtney Love isn't afraid to portray her vulnerable side. Paul Rudd (``The Object of My Affection'') shows his range by giving a mostly unlikable character some interesting undertones. The biggest surprise, though, is Kate Hudson, who plays a ditsy woman with more spunk than she first lets on. (Trivia note: Hudson is the daughter of Bill Hudson and Goldie Hawn.) Purely as a chance to see some of the best of the young acting set, ``200 Cigarettes'' is worth a view.
