- Capsule review:
- Under the best of circumstances, it would be hard to make a good movie about the subject of sexual frustration -unless, of course, we were talking about a National Lampoon project. Of course, any film that has Michael Lehmann at the directing helm isn't enjoying anything near the best of circumstances. So, what we have, then, is a movie about a jilted guy (Josh Hartnett) who finds he can't enjoy empty sex (which he seems to get a lot of, poor boy), and so he decides to give up sex - ALL sex - for lent. Then he meets the lovely Erica (Shannyn Sossamon) and his vow is in trouble. There's room here, somewhere, for a good comedy, and sometimes you may laugh in spite of yourself. But Lehmann, following the script by screenwriter Rob Perez, insists on being as obvious as possible. Jokes about sex are one thing, but the Viagra in the orange juice gag is just too much. What, though, do you expect from the man responsible for "Hudson Hawk"? Rated R (strong sexual content, nudity, language).
