- There are car movies, and then there are car movies. Minus the somber presence of Vin Diesel, this sequel to 2001's "The Fast and the Furious" improves on the original by not trying to emulate Shakespeare. Instead, it's all muscle autos and "Miami Vice" heat. The personable Paul Walker is back as Brian O'Connor, now a civilian after being bounced from the force (for letting Diesel's character escape in the first film). Recruited against his will to go undercover and snare the obligatory bad guy, Carter Verone (Cole Hauser), O'Connor convinces his childhood friend Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson) to come along. Together they race around the streets in cars so souped up and shiny that they look like something out of cereal boxes. John Singleton ("Boyz N the Hood"), who also has been known to take himself a little too seriously, lightens things up as much as he keeps the action going. The result is a film that is as funny and fresh, if forgettable, as Walker's laugh is infectious.
