- Capsule review:
- Taking up where his breathtaking film ``Amores Perros'' left off, Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu tells the story of three individuals brought together through a traffic accident. Sean Penn is Paul, a guy needing a heart transplant. Naomi Watts is the woman married to the guy whose heart goes to Paul. And Benicio Del Toro is the ex-convict who makes it all happen. Like ``Amores Perros'' before it, ``21 Grams'' involves itself with characters whose own self- destructive tendencies work with the whims of fate to bring them face to face with the worst that life had to offer _ with a chance of the best appearing always at hand. If the film ultimately doesn't give a clear message, at least Inarritu forces us to think about what he has put on the screen. And they should just ship the Oscar to Sean Penn right now.
