On the Wall: Coeur d'Alene 2nd Friday ArtWalk
11/14/2008 | Tonight, 5 - 8 p. m. In Dutch, there's a word that doesn't seem to have an English equivalent, but we certainly could use tonight: "gezellig."
Master's milestone
11/7/2008 | It's not every day you get to visit the studio of a modern master. A week ago on Halloween, Harold Balazs a spirited soul who adores the absurd invited me into his Mead workshop to have a firsthand look at his works in progress and an insightful look into the man who helped bring modern art to Spokane.
Civic Theatre stages 'Sweeney Todd'
10/31/2008 | It's a two-nights-only benefit performance staged "in concert," which means it's not a fully staged musical. Yet it may be one of the Spokane Civic Theatre's most anticipated productions of the season.
The Phantom returns to Spokane
10/3/2008 | The last time "The Phantom of the Opera" came to Spokane, it set a record here by selling 82,500 tickets. It won't quite reach that level on the second visit of the national tour, which begins Wednesday, only because it's a three-week run this time instead of a four-week run.
Little Spokane River Artist Studio Tour
9/26/2008 | This is the weekend of the artist studio tour. You can head north to the green, winding, wooded Little Spokane River valley, and visit four beautiful artists' properties along the country creeks and river there, while viewing the artwork of the hosting artists and their selected guest artists.
Was it all a dream?
9/26/2008 | Coeur d'Alene's homegrown opera organization, Opera Plus!, tackles one of the most famous and most produced operas of all time this weekend Verdi's "La Traviata."
'Les Miserables' as big as it gets
8/8/2008 | Doesn't "Les Miserables," the epic musical about social justice and filial love in France, sound a little ambitious for a summer-stock theater? Yes, that's the way it sounded to the people at the Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre, too, when they discovered they had become one of the few regional theaters to win the rights.
Exploring Spokane's patriotic art
7/4/2008 | Three cheers for the red, white and blue. And bronze, aluminum, and patina green. Sometime between the picnic and the fireworks, while you're celebrating Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness, celebrate some of America's finest patriotic public sculpture right here in Spokane. The people and events that have sculpted this great, rugged piece of land into the United States of America are captured in great public works of art, sculpted by some of the most prolific artists of our region.

A knack for visual abstraction
9/5/2007 | "I like the powerful, abstract images of graffiti art," says Matt R. Hamlin. One of his favorite books is "Graffiti World: Street Art from Five Continents."
Another influence is Jim Dine, a versatile contemporary artist who is equally comfortable with drawing, printmaking, photography, painting and sculpture. "I saw his sculpture exhibition at WSU in 2004," says Hamlin, "and I really liked how he would do just part of an object or image and let the viewer complete the rest."
