Hoon-ko commemorates the death of the founder of Shin Buddhism, Shinran Shonin. This holiday is observed in early Jan. 9-16 and is among the most important observed in the Jodo Shinshu tradition. Led by the Rev. Joshin Dennis Fujimoto who was born in Japan and received his master’s degree from the Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley in 1980. He received Tokudo ordination in 1981; Kyoshi ordination in Kyoto, Japan in 2004 and reached Kaikyoshi status in 2005. Service followed by potluck lunch.
