Nov. 8-17. Set at the turn of the century in New York City, “Newsies” tells the story of a ragtag group of newsboys who form a union to fight the greedy and powerful newspaper owners who raised the price of “papes.” Led by the charismatic Jack Kelly and enthusiastic reporter Katherine Plumber, the newsies face a nearly impossible challenge. Inspired by the true story of the 1899 Newsboys Strike, Newsies is a joyful, entertaining musical that celebrates the strength of youth joining together to face injustice. Showtime is Nov. 8-10 and 15-16 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. Doors open 30 minutes before the show and tickets are available at the door. Ferris HS will host a Junior Newsie Camp on Nov. 17 prior to the 2 p.m. matinee for kids aged 5-12 who want to learn Newsie dances, meet the cast before the show and have a private backstage tour. For more info on the camp, contact Mary Cooper, 509-354-6076 or email her at Marycoo@spokaneschools.org.
