Collins’ book, “On the Arctic Frontier: Ernest Leffingwell’s Polar Explorations and Legacy” lends fascinating insight into Ernest Leffingwell’s adventures, character, and values and his lifelong passion for the Arctic. Wellman’s “Peace Weavers: Uniting the Salish Coast Through Cross-Cultural Marriages,” about 90 percent of all marriages in Whatcom County’s early decades were cross-cultural, connecting white men with Salish women. However, written chronicles of this time period only mention white women as founding mothers of the county. Wellman was determined to illuminate the hidden history surrounding these relationships.
