July Workshops at Emerge
Outdoor Painting with Chelsea Cordova: Learn a simplified method of approaching the process of outdoor painting. Students will meet at Emerge for an intro and some beginners exercises, and then as a group head to a nearby setting for an outdoor practice. Return to Emerge for a wrap up critique, lunch and clean up. Painting materials provided but feel free to bring your own outdoor easel if you have one. Exercises will be in water based medium but class/demo will address oil mediums as well. Ages 12 and older, July 8 (weather permitting) 9 a.m.-1 p.m. $75; Comic Workshop with Derrick Freeland: Learn the fundamentals of comics creation. You’ll learn what makes a comic a comic and get the hands-on experience you need to start your own comic. A two part workshop. Ages 11 and older, July 8 and 15, 1–4 p.m. $55; Printmaking Workshop with Hanna Kuhns: This class will explore the basic skills of hand-carving into soft rubber linoleum, which is a lot like creating your own stamp! No previous block printing skills are necessary, but the ability to use sharp carving tools is important. Ages eight and older, July 10 and 12, 10 a.m.-noon. $25; Parent and Youth Pottery with Jasmine Reed: Explore the basics of wheel throwing. Participants will create bowls and a cup and finish with texture and details. (Maximum to kids per parent). A four part workshop. Ages seven and older, July 18-19 and 25-26, 6:30–8:30 p.m. Free, sponsored by the CDA Arts Commission; Parent and Youth Weaving with Sue Tye: Learn simple weaving techniques in this fun class. Varied weaving threads in colors and textures are provided so all that’s needed is your imagination. Students will weave their own vibrant wall hanging. No experience is needed. (maximum two kids per parent). Ages seven and older, July 22, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Free, sponsored by the CDA Arts Commission; and Teen Printmaking with Daren Smith: An introduction to printmaking methods, accessible to all levels of skill. We’ll learn how to start with an image, apply it into the printing mediums, and transfer the image onto multiple surfaces. Relief (and possibly screen) printing will be offered, with an explanation of the process while you make your own marks. A two part workshop. Ages 12 and older, July 25-26, 6:30–8:30 p.m. $35.
