March 25-26. Mikhail Glinka’s Kamarinskaya pioneered the symphonic arrangement of Russian folk tunes. “The Russian symphonic school is all in Kamarinskaya as the whole oak is in the acorn,” wrote Tchaikovsky. In his Violin Concerto, the virtuosity of the soloist sparkle against a lyrical backdrop; an exquisite slow movement gives way to a folk-inspired finale that serves up a dazzling array of pyrotechnics. Violinist Benjamin Bellman’s skillful approach will masterfully navigate Tchaikovsky’s inspired score. Dmitri Shostakovich’s studiously apolitical Ninth is thoroughly engaging, an endless comedy of musical wit. Eckart Preu, conductor. Performances Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.
