“Wow! That Bitch is Crazy!” - Gendered Responses to The Bachelor”
As a feminist scholar, I love/hate watching The Bachelor with my girlfriends (and, of course, a bottle of wine). Reality TV plays a role in the construction of gendered identities and in the maintenance of egregiously oppressive stereotypes. The fairy tale trope-laden reality TV show sends viewers the message that in order to be “fit for love,” one must be thin, tan, and in control of one’s emotions. Additionally, The Bachelor portrays women as stupid, incompetent, gold-digging bitches. But, what do audiences do with such messages? Are we repurposing them? Reproducing them? Actively and strongly resisting them? In this talk, Callie Spencer, Ph.D., Leisure Studies, will explore the performances of women viewers and the impact of such performances on gendered subjectivity production. Part of the Contemporary Issues in Feminist Research series. Presented by Women’s Studies Center.
