Spokane Symphony and Chorale will join the ecstatic multitudes around the world who celebrate New Year’s Eve with a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. It has been called “the ultimate symphony.” It is the official anthem of the European Union and millions of people around the world have been inspired by its themes of freedom and brotherhood. Musically, no other piece in history has had a greater impact on later composers. For conductor Eckart Preu, this music has great personal significance, symbolizing the opportunity of new beginnings after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
