Spokane Falls Community College brings a diverse, intriguing selection of films to Spokane on Tuesday evenings, April 22-May 20 during its annual film festival. Introduced by SFCC faculty members, all films begin at 7:15 p.m. April 22: “The Intouchables” (France) Based on a true story, the film tells the story of a rich aristocrat, paralyzed from the neck down, who hires an unemployed carefree pot smoker from a poor family to be his caretaker. Introduced by communications instructor Hadda Estrada. April 29: “Captive Beauty” (Colombia) A documentary that goes behind the walls of a Colombian women’s prison where inmates prepare for a beauty pageant, sharing an intriguing view of how life and beauty intertwine with the struggles of Colombian society. Introduced by Spanish instructor Erin Johnson. May 6: “Lucky” (South Africa) Following the death of his mother, Lucky leaves his Zulu village to fulfill his dream of going to school. In the city, he meets an elderly Indian woman whose concept of caste does not allow her to touch black people or anything they have touched. Their relationship is complicated because Lucky only speaks Zulu and old woman, Hindi. Introduced by film instructor Mary Hyatt. May 13: “Romeos” (German) A German tragicomedy, this is the brutal, but honest story of a 20-year-old transgender man who is transitioning from female to male. Introduced by film/English instructor Barbara Williamson. May 20: “Together with You” (China) A true story about an adolescent violin prodigy who competes in the cutthroat world of Chinese classical music. His father dreams of his success and goes to great lengths to ensure it. Introduced by social science instructor Ping Ping.
