Electro Swing benefit show is Spokane Valley Partners Community Gardens spring outreach event and fundraiser. The event is being held to raise funds for the construction of a second community garden in the Edgecliff neighborhood and to help fund the backyards garden program. The event features a live gypsy swing band, dance group and Electro Swing DJ to round out the night on the main stage. The event also offers a fun photo booth with 1920s themed props, a silent auction featuring donated items from local farmers market vendors and businesses. The event provides donors the opportunity to “Grow It Forward” by sponsoring the rental or construction of a garden bed for a Valley family or the purchase of a fruit tree for our new community garden in Edgecliff. Party favors will be handed out in the form of seed packets and paper mustaches. The Edgecliff community is a low income neighborhood that has seen most of its community facilities eroded through budget cuts and neglect over the years. The most damaging loss was the closing of Pratt Elementary School. Pratt was the Community’s civic center and many programs and civic groups operated out of this facility after school hours including Weed and Seed Programs such as block watch groups, recreation activity programs, meals on wheels, and a senior meal program. Once the school closed these programs could no longer utilize the facility because of a Washington State law requiring that public buildings be leased at the market rate, a rate which none of the programs could afford. There is new hope for this neighborhood, with Pratt Elementary School scheduled to reopen this fall after being closed for seven years. The new Edgecliff Community Garden along with the school will serve to reinvigorate Edgecliff creating new opportunities for both students and residents to grow their own food and build community ties.
