Tibetan Music for Peace and Harmony
Tsering Lodoe was born in India and studied at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA), in Dharamsala. TIPA was established under His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s guidance in 1959, and is the foremost center for the study of Tibetan traditional art and music. Lodoe continued his affiliation with TIPA for over 23 years earning advanced degrees in all aspects of traditional Tibetan music and performing arts. In addition to his studies, he toured throughout the globe performing for TIPA. Lodoe performed on the sound track in the internationally acclaimed film, Himalaya, and Seven Years in Tibet, which starred Brad Pitt. Lodoe has sung for His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Pope John Paul. In 2005, he won Best Composition and Best Opera Singer in the prestigious Tibetan Music Awards. Lodoe’s magical voice, which carries deep nuances of his rich Tibetan lineage, can be heard on his recent CD, Tibetana. This album is a prayer to the many people who died in the 2010 Kham province earthquake, on the Tibetan plateau and recently Lodoe performed for His Holiness theDalai Lama in Portland. Currently, Lodoe lives in Arlee, Montana. He was the traditional music and dance instructor for the children’s Tibetan Language and Culture Class sponsored by the Tibetan Association of Washington. He was responsible for the development and direction of many of the Tibetan children’s performances at Tibet Fest last year and has continued in that role this year. Nawang Khechog is first Tibetan Grammy Nominee and the most renowned Tibetan flutist in the world. He has won multiple awards from Tibet, India, Nepal and United States of America. Nawang was a monk for 11 years and studied Buddhist philosophy and meditation with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and many other Tibetan masters. He also lived as hermit, meditating in the Himalayan foothills for several years under the guidance of His Holiness. He has collaborated with Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, Kitaro, Trey Anastasio [Phish], Ustad Sultan Khan, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma, David Bowie, Michael Stipe (R.E.M.), Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (nephew of the famous Qawalli singer), Natalie Merchant, Peter Kater, R. Carlos Nakai, Paul Winter, Allen Ginsberg, Patty Smith, Steve Gorn, and performed in the same concerts with U2, Pearl Jam, Taj Mahal, Beastie Boys, Ben Harper, R.E.M., Alanis Morissette, Bjork, Sonic Youth, Billy Corgan, Moby, Dave Matthews, Herbie Hancock, Tracy Chapman, KRS-1, Sean Lennon and A Tribe Called Quest. Nawang has performed at Carnegie Hall, Universal Amphitheater, Radio City Music Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, The Pentagon, World Peace Festivals, numerous schools, Art Galleries and RFK Stadium, just to mention a few. Nawang’s music has been used in various documentaries, most recently for part of the sound track of Hollywood’s major motion picture ‘Seven Years in Tibet,’ directed by Jean Jacques Annaud and starring Brad Pitt. He also worked as a Tibetan Assistant Director and played six different acting rolls for the film.
