Harvey is a professor of history and chair of the history department at the University of Colorado. He is an author and editor of eight books, including most recently The Color of Christ: The Son of God and the Saga of Race in America (The University of North Carolina Press, 2012). After receiving his doctorate, Harvey became a Lilly fellow at Valparaiso University (with Whitworth Professor of English Pamela Corpron Parker, ‘81).
