The WSU Big Band II, directed by Matt Lanka, will perform: “Bye Bye Blackbird,” arranged by Lanka; “When You’re Smiling,” arranged by Los Angeles studio musician Tom Kubis; and “All or Nothing at All,” arranged by George Stone. Soloists, all WSU students, will include pianist Brandon Nelson, trumpeter Drew Kohlbeck and saxophonist Indra Suardana. The WSU Jazz Big Band will present three works by director Gregory Yasinitsky: a tribute to the hard bop era, “Blue Note;” the mysterious ballad, “New York Confidential;” and the quirky “Blues for Woody Allen.” His arrangements of Harry Connick, Jr.’s “We Are in Love” and Henry Mancini’s “The Days of Wine and Roses” will follow. The band also will perform the beautiful Duke Ellington ballad, “Sophisticated Lady,” as arranged by Mike Crotty, former arranger of the U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note. Soloists, all students or faculty, will include vocalist Jeff Coleron; saxophonists Lanka and Jonathan Urmenita; trumpeters Gabe Braendlein and Noah Austin; trombonist Nick Brockmeyer; guitarist Clay Parkman; pianist Kana Ishii and drummer Paul Davis.
