Washington Idaho Symphony
April 27-28. Performances Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at Domey/Gladish Auditorium, 115 NW State St. in Pullman; and Sunday, 3 p.m. at Lewiston High School auditorium, 1114 Ninth Ave., Lewiston, Idaho. Opening with a suite of pieces by Soviet composer Sergei Prokofiev brilliantly orchestrated by our Composer in Residence, Dr. Ryan Hare, we will move into 1930s New York-American life with the free-spirited jazzy rhythms and bluesy harmonies of George Gershwin’s famous Rhapsody in Blue, performed by Grammy-nominated pianist Dr. Duane Hulbert. After intermission, we will travel to Stalin’s 1930s Soviet Union for Dmitri Shostakovich’s tour de force Symphony No. 5, a pillar of 20th century Soviet modernism.
