Maiden Rock Hike

June 23, 2012

This is a family-friendly, easy 2.3-mile trek through healthy forests and moss-covered rock to Maiden Rock, a large granite formation that reaches into Lake Pend Oreille from its shore near Blacktail Mountain. The trail follows a seasonal, well-tempered creek—traveling through bear, elk, moose and deer country—to reach a long beach of smooth, flat rocks and a campground complete with tables and a fire pit. Bring your lunch and pack a swimsuit in case it’s hot. For a midday break you’ll be able to soak up the sun on the water’s edge or cool off with a refreshing leap from Maiden Rock. Distance: 4.6-miles total, with a 2,400-ft total elevation change Difficulty: Easy. A few sections of the trail are steep, but the trail is short and shaded
