National Trails Day with REI and Riverside State Park
How does removing trees help trees? Our forest is currently under a lot of stress due to competition and crowding. Thinning out the trees will reduce that stress which reduces the risk of infections such as bark beetle. A “bottom up” thinning allows for the larger healthier trees to better access water and nutrients from the soil. Plan to bring a smile and a pair of gloves for every member of your group. Riverside State Park will provide pruners but if you have a set and want to bring it that will help. Kids are welcome; most of the project will be cutting and hauling trees smaller than one inch in diameter. Chainsaws will not be needed and accompanying pets need to be leashed at all times. Discover Passes are not required for parking at this event.
