11th Annual Sapatq’ayn Cinema
March 27-30. UI’s Native American Film Festival. This year’s festival features diverse genres, including documentary, mockumentary, short feature and full-length feature films. The festival is designed to increase awareness and appreciation of Native American issues and artistry. Wednesday, 7 p.m., Ceremonial Opening with Vandal Nation Drum and Nez Perce Elder Horace Axtell. Screening of A Retrospective of John Trudell’s film roles with guest activist/actor/spoken word artist John Trudell on acting and activism. Thursday, 7 p.m., Feature film, “The Lesser Blessed,” based on the novel by First Nations (Dogrib) author Richard Van Camp. Friday, 7 p.m., A Night of Short Films, including “The Rocket Boy” (Navajo); “The 6th World” (Navajo); “Shimásáni” (Navajo); “Universal VIP” (Blackfeet/Non-native); “Two Cars, One Night” (Aotearoa/New Zealand).” Questions and answers with Universal VIP Director (and UI alum) Ken White and actor Lily Gladstone. Saturday, 7 p.m., A special Sneak Preview of the work-in-progress “Winter in the Blood,” a feature film based on the James Welch novel. Questions and answers with screenwriter Ken White, director Alex Smith and actor Lily Gladstone.
