Friday’s openings: an adolescent superhero

Dan Webster

Fantasy versus reality is on the movie menu this coming Friday, according to the national-release schedule. The openings are:

"Shazam!": When 14-year-old Billy Batson yells out the title of this film, he becomes a superhero in an adult body. Kind of like Tom Hanks in "Big," but without the super powers.

"Pet Sematary": The second adaptation of Stephen King's 1983 novel, this one uses CGI to enhance the story about a grieving family whose use of a mysterious graveyard opens the portal to true evil. Uh-oh.

"Best of Enemies": This inspired-by-real-events feature focuses on the standoff between a civil rights activist (Taraji P. Henson) and an official with the North Carolina KKK (Sam Rockwell). How do you find common ground?

And at the Magic Lantern:

"Transit": When, in an attempt to escape the Nazis, a French man assumes the identity of a dead author, he is surprised when he runs into the dead man's wife. Oh la la. In French and German with English subtitles.

As always, I'll update when the local theaters finalize their bookings,
