Friday’s releases: Soldiers, robbers, country love

Dan Webster

Our initial look at the coming week of movies still lacks some of the more highly rated films of 2017. But never fear: Local movie schedules are never finalized until at least Tuesday afternoon. So for the moment, the coming week looks like this:

"12 Strong": Based on real events (a typical warning), this big-screen war film tells the story of the small detachment of U.S. Special Forces troops who joined with an Afghani group to attack — traveling on horses — a Taliban outpost in the weeks following the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Adapted from the nonfiction book "Horse Soldiers" by Doug Stanton.

"Den of Thieves": Tough-guy members of the Los Angeles County sheriff's department go up against a tough-guy gang of armed robbers who plan to take down a Federal Reserve Bank. Expect a high testosterone level.

"Forever My Girl": A country star, returning home to attend the funeral of his friend, runs into the woman he left at the altar — and her terminally cute daughter. Clearly not 50 shades of Nashville.

As always, I'll update when the local theaters finalize their listings.
