And, finally, Spielberg gives us ‘The Post’

Dan Webster

And, again, the local movie scene has shifted. "The Post," Steven Spielberg's film about the Washington Post's handling of the Pentagon Papers case, will open on Friday. To wit:

"The Post": Meryl Streep plays Katharine Graham, owner of the Washington Post, who must decide whether to risk the paper's reputation by publishing the controversial documents. With Tom Hanks playing Ben Bradlee.

Spielberg's movie posted an 87 percent approval rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Following are some of the comments:

Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic: "This is a story about taking risks, about putting the good of the country before your own. It sounds corny and clichéd, but even in Spielberg's hands it doesn't come off that way."

Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times: "The Post" tells of a great moment in journalism - and a great moment in one remarkable woman's life."

Manohla Dargis, New York Times: "Mr. Spielberg, a shrewd entertainer who can be waylaid by moralism, rarely lets virtue drag this movie down."

Nothing new is opening at the Magic Lantern, which continues its slate of "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri," "Lady Bird" and "The Disaster Artist." So go, see a movie. And enjoy.
