Slate chalks up two

Rick Bonino

Two years ago, brothers Jason and Ryan Wing started Slate Creek Brewing, named after their favorite fishing and kayaking spot off the St. Joe River.

Now, with the beer flowing bigger and better than ever, they’re celebrating their second anniversary on Wednesday from 5 to 10 p.m.

They’ll be pouring a pilot batch of an easy-drinking summer seasonal, Rivertime (4.5 percent alcohol by volume, 20 International Bitterness Units), along with the regular lineup.

All pints will be $3; for $6, you can get a souvenir anniversary glass (shaped like an aluminum can) and your first fill. There also will be free burgers (while they last), and cornhole games.

The big headline of Slate Creek’s second year was adding a 15-barrel brewhouse to the previous, tiny two-barrel system in October. That’s allowed for not only a more consistent supply of beer in the taproom, but enough left over to distribute to accounts around Coeur d’Alene.

They plan to start shipping beer farther away in Idaho in another month or two, Jason Wing says, and have started the paperwork for Washington distribution, though there’s no set timeline for that.

And as those anniversary glasses might suggest, cans are in the plans as well.

“We’ve got a guy doing graphics for cans right now,” Jason Wing says . “Hopefully that will happen before summertime.”
