Feeling single, drinking Citra

Rick Bonino

Warmer weather has returned, and so have the single-hop pale ales at Perry Street.

The newly released version stars Citra, an in-demand varietal known for its fruity, tropical flavors and aromas as a finishing hop.

But when used throughout the boil, Citra takes on a more complex character. The Perry pale (5 percent alcohol by volume, 40 International Bitterness Units) starts out more grassy and piney, then turns more juicy and fruity as it warms with a pleasantly lingering bitterness.

“It surprised me,” says owner/brewer Ben Lukes. “There’s a lot of depth to it beyond just that one note that it’s known for.

“The feedback has been good. It’s a great beer for sitting out on the patio.”

A few kegs will be distributed to outside accounts around town, Lukes says, including The Two Seven Public House.

Perry poured a single-hop Azacca pale when it opened last March, then released El Dorado and Amarilllo versions over the summer. Next up will be one with fruity, complex Equinox hops.

Also look for the popular Doma Chronic Porter, brewed with coffee from the Post Falls roaster, to return after the saison is gone.
