Making a list …

Rick Bonino

Need ideas for some last-minute shopping (by organized standards, anyway)? Consider craft beer.

Many breweries and some taphouses carry house-branded clothing, glassware and other merchandise. And filled growlers make great gifts, too; just don’t buy them more than a day or two before they’re consumed, so they stay fresh.

Beyond that, here are a few beer-related area businesses you might want to check out:

Northwest Brew Gear: This is the place to go for stylish growlers and accessories. The containers come in a wide variety of sizes (regular half-gallon growlers, full-gallon “grumblers” and 32-ounce “squewlers”), materials (glass, stainless steel, plastic) and finishes (for glass growlers, from candied to textured to silvered – along with Seattle Seahawks’ 12th Man decals).

Accompaniments include everything from handles and carriers, to collars for draining, to carbonated GrowlTap caps. Shop online now, and look for a physical storefront early next year at 25 N. Napa.

The Malted Mutt: For the canines on your list (or their human lackeys), these treats are made with spent brewing grains from several local breweries along with other natural ingredients, in flavors ranging from Peanut Butter Pumpkin Pale to Oatmeal Apple Farmhouse Ale to Banana Honey Hefeweizen. (Don’t worry, they contain no alcohol or hops, both dangerous to dogs.)

Special for Christmas are holiday-logo pint glasses filled with Peanut Butter Molasses Porter morsels, which you can use for your own liquid treats after Fido gets his fill.

Craftbrewswag.com: This recent start-up in Priest River, Idaho manufactures merch for several regional breweries who don’t want to bother with it themselves, including Orlison, Northern Ales, Kootenai River and Wallace.

Look for T-shirts, workshirts, hoodies, hats, drinkware and growlers emblazoned with logos from breweries that aren’t as easily accessible for Spokane residents (and don’t sell their own swag online).
