On a cold morning, Kalico Kitchen offers warmth

Dan Webster

So, I'm driving my brother home from a dental appointment on a recent icy morning when I caught breakfast fever. We were lucky that, just at that moment, I was driving south on Division — past a little place called Kalico Kitchen. So we stopped.

It was just what we needed. Quick, friendly service. Plates full of eggs, bacon and toast (sourdough for me, an English muffin for my brother), and cups full of hot (if a tad weak) coffee. My only real qualm: Next time I'll make sure to order crispy bacon.

And I'll ensure that next time is soon. Because along with everything else, the price was right — a full $2 less expensive that some other popular breakfast places.

Maybe if I go back enough times, I'll get my name on one of those coffee cups stored along the west wall. Filled, maybe, with some good French roast.
