Wake up, folks, it’s Oscar day!

Dan Webster

Woke up this morning rethinking my Oscar predictions. But, at this late date, I'm not gonna do anything about them.

I've usually done well enough with the top six categories, but then they are usually the easiest to call. The real pros, and all those years of overseeing The Spokesman-Review's annual Oscar contest proved to me that some people excel at this, are those who can correctly guess the also-ran categories: Best Documentary Short, for example, or Best Sound Mixing.

Still, Im not the only observer still wondering. Roger Ebert, for one, seems to be facilating between Emmanuelle Riva and Jennifer Lawrence as Best Actress. It's just another sign that this year seems particularly hard to predict.

We'll find out soon enough. The actual broadcast doesn't begin until 5:30 p.m., though ABC is beginning its Red Carpet coverage at 4 (and E! is already — seriously? — running something it's calling a "Countdown to the Red Carpet"). I, though, prefer to watch golf — for the moment.
