And it was rushed, but Ben Affleck managed to pull off a moving acceptance speech with grace, thanking Steven Spielberg, Canada and Iran while mentioning how much he's learned since winning his Best Screenplay so many years ago. And, of course, he thanks his wife … Jennifer Garner. Which my wife certainly appreciated.

Then the show ends with MacFarlane singing a duo with my, uh, favorite character of the night, Kristin Chenoweth (who is still acting like she's just inhaled a whole amphetamine factory. What, is she auditioning for a part of "Breaking Bad")?

Final verdict: Some laughs, some grimaces, but better than many, many past years. Thank you, Capt. Kirk.
