Another weekend approaches and another pair of films is set to open at the Magic Lantern Theatre. They are as follows:

“The Truffle Hunters”: Fans of Italian cooking will swoon over this documentary about the elderly Italian men who scour the forest of northern Italy in search of the rare and delicious Alba truffle.

Washington Post film critic Ann Hornaday had this to say: “This endearing, thoroughly entertaining movie might be what we all need right now: An invitation to stop and smell the roses – or, if you're lucky, their far less showy fungal cousins.”

Added Katie Walsh of the Los Angeles Times: “A film that lies at the intersection of documentary, Italian neorealism and Renaissance painting, a wholly singular visual experience that is inextricably tied to the film's storytelling.”

“The Paper Tigers”: Old is something new in this martial arts action comedy about three over-the-hill kung fu practitioners who, bad backs and all, return to the mat to avenge the death of their former master.

Wrote Variety critic Jessica King, “With only a couple of clicks of the dial and a little dash of hybrid vigor, the hackneyed can be made fresh again, a point proven by Tran Quoc Bao's silly and special little kung fu comedy ‘The Paper Tigers.’ ”

And Niall Browne of Movies in Focus wrote this: “There's a serious amount of fun to be had with Tran Quoc Bao's The Paper Tigers. The film transcends its low budget origins and manages to stand toe-to-toe with comedies with five times the budget.

So there you have it. Go. See a movie. And enjoy.
